The hooded sweatshirt, affectionately known as the hoodie, like the t-shirt and denim jeans, has a history of cultural significance.
They first appeared in the 12th century, when monks and workers wore hooded tunics and capes to protect themselves against rain and snow. Fast forward to 1930s and a knitting factory in New York begins adding hoods to sweatshirts to provide extra warmth for its workers. The modern hoodie was born.
It quickly gained popularity, worn by the military during training exercises and as branded athletic wear, initially on college and university campuses. In the 1970s, the hoodie gained notoriety as skaters, surfers and the emerging rap and hip hop scene gave the garment a cool, urban street vibe. The hoodie became an icon of rebellion and empowerment.
